Frequently Asked Questions

What does fee-only mean?

We're a fee-only fiduciary, which means the only people who pay us are our clients. We don't earn commissions on any product or take payments from fund companies for recommending something. As fiduciaries, we're required to put your interests first, and the way we're paid keeps our advice aligned with your goals.

How are you paid?

We're paid directly by you, in one of three ways. Investment management is billed as a percentage of the assets we manage, starting at 1.15% a year and stepping down as balances grow. Ongoing planning is a flat annual fee. One time projects are billed at $250 per hour with a $1,500 minimum. Our Services and Fees page lists every tier.

How much does ongoing financial planning cost?

We offer three ongoing planning levels. Prosperity Path is $3,000 per year, Prosperity Facilitator is $6,000 per year, and Prosperity Legacy starts at $10,000 per year based on complexity. There's also an upfront charge of $1,500 to $5,000, and the annual fee is billed in advance in equal monthly payments. Fees may be negotiable in certain cases.

What does investment management cost?

Our advisory fee is a blended percentage of the assets we manage: 1.15% on the first $500,000, 1.00% up to $1 million, 0.90% up to $2 million, 0.80% up to $3 million, 0.70% up to $4 million, 0.60% up to $5 million, and 0.50% above that. Fund expenses and custodian charges are separate from our fee.

Who do you work with?

Most of our clients are business owners and individuals whose wealth has some complexity to it: investments, stock options or equity compensation, tax planning, and estate planning that all need to work together. We coordinate those pieces with your CPA or attorney. With no asset minimum, we also welcome people who are earlier on the path and want to get it right from the start.

Where are you located?

We're based in Norwell, Massachusetts, and we operate as a virtual firm. That means we meet with you by video or phone, or in person at a shared meeting space when that's easier. You get the same personal attention either way, without needing to drive to an office.

Do you work with clients outside Massachusetts?

Yes. We serve clients across the Northeast and beyond. Generous Wealth Management is registered as an investment adviser in Massachusetts, Colorado, Florida, and South Carolina, and we can only offer advisory services in states where we're registered or exempt from registration. If you live somewhere else, reach out and we'll tell you whether we can help.

What's your investment approach?

We build diversified, low cost portfolios grounded in decades of academic research rather than predictions. We don't try to guess the next hot stock. We use Dimensional funds in client portfolios and are listed in Dimensional's Find an Advisor directory. Dimensional doesn't manage your account or advise you; we do, and the investments always serve your plan.

Do you help with taxes?

Yes. Tax planning is built into our work. Our team includes EAs and/or CPAs, and our ongoing planning levels include tax planning sessions each year. We look at which accounts to use, when to take income, and how decisions like selling a business affect your tax bill, and we coordinate with your own tax preparer.

Who holds my money?

Your assets are held at an independent custodian in your name, not by us. We're custodian agnostic, and today most of our clients' accounts are at Altruist and Charles Schwab. You receive statements directly from the custodian, so you can always see exactly what you own. We manage the investments under the authority you give us and help you choose the custodian that fits.

Do you sell insurance or annuities on commission?

No. We don't sell insurance, and we don't take commissions on insurance, annuities, or any other product. On the rare occasion an annuity makes sense for your plan, we use advisory annuities, which are fee-based and carry no commission. When you need insurance, we review your coverage and coordinate with an insurance professional you trust, so there's never a product sale behind our advice.

Can I hire you for a one time project?

Yes. Not everyone needs an ongoing relationship. We offer stand alone financial planning and consulting at $250 per hour with a minimum fee of $1,500 per engagement. Half is due when we begin and the rest when the work is complete. We'll define the scope and cost with you before any work starts.

Do I need a minimum amount to invest?

No, we don't have an asset minimum. We're happy to work with clients who have smaller balances, because good advice matters at every stage. Every client has a minimum fee of $125 per month, and planning clients don't need to move any assets to us at all. If you're unsure which option fits, a short conversation is the easiest way to find out what makes sense for you.

How do I get started?

Just call or text us at (781) 242-5760, or email Contact@GenWealthMan.com. We'll set up a relaxed first conversation to learn about you and your goals. From there we gather your information, clarify what matters most, build your plan together, and revisit it as life changes. There's no pressure to commit on the first call.
