Quarterly Market Insights | April 2026

Q1 2026 Market Recap: U.S. and Canadian Markets Review and Key Takeaways

April 2026 – By Lee Generous, ChFC®, EA | Founder, Generous Wealth Management LLC

Q1 2026 delivered a choppy start to the year, with U.S. equities facing pressure from AI disruption fears, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and shifting economic data. While major U.S. indexes posted losses, Canada’s market showed resilience.

  • S&P 500: -4.63%
  • Nasdaq Composite: -7.11%

A Choppy Quarter in Review

January: Stocks trended higher early on upbeat economic data (inflation and retail sales), pushing the S&P 500 above 7,000 for the first time.³˒⁴ Geopolitical tensions and bank earnings added pressure later in the month.⁵

February: Investor concerns about AI disrupting business models weighed on tech-heavy sectors. The focus later shifted back to geopolitics. The Dow posted a modest gain, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq declined.⁶˒⁷

March: Volatility increased with Middle East developments, but a strong last-day rally helped recover some losses.⁸

Canada Recap

Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite carried momentum into 2026, hitting record highs in January driven by mining, materials, and financials.¹⁰ February strength came from safe-haven flows into materials amid global uncertainty.¹¹ March saw pressure from oil supply disruptions, but a late rally limited losses.¹²
